Packaging Options for Metal Game Coins and Dice

Colorful metal board game currency tokens with embossed denominations, OEM multi-finish set

Metal game coins, tokens, and dice are heavy, polished, and often plated in several colours. If they rattle loose in a carton, finishes can rub and counts can go wrong before the parts ever reach your game box. Packing is the last step of production, but it is worth planning at the same time as the artwork.

This guide walks through packaging options for metal board game coins, tokens, and dice, and what to tell your factory so the parts arrive ready for kitting. It comes from WangFuk, an OEM / ODM metal factory in Chang-an, Dongguan. Export packing is part of every quote we make; we do not publish prices, so this is about choices and trade-offs, not costs.

Start with one question: who opens the carton?

The right packing depends on what happens next:

  • Your game manufacturer kits the parts into each game box. They usually want metal parts bulk-packed by type and value, with clear counts, so assembly lines can work quickly.
  • A fulfilment partner ships add-ons (for example a metal coin upgrade pledge). Each unit may need to be packed as a complete, labelled set.
  • You sell the coins or dice at retail. Presentation packaging such as a gift box or tray may be part of the product.

Tell us which case applies and where the goods ship. Many packing questions answer themselves once the destination is clear.

Common packing formats

These are the formats board game buyers most often ask about. Each is quoted per project; the right one depends on your game, channel, and budget.

Poly bags (bulk or per set)

The simplest option. Coins can be bagged by denomination in fixed counts, or one complete set per bag for each game copy. Separating plating colours into their own bags helps protect finishes and keeps counting easy at the kitting stage. Ask for the count and value printed or labelled on each bag if your assembly partner needs it.

Coin capsules

Round clear capsules hold a single coin and protect both faces. They suit premium or collector coins, promotional coins sent to backers, or a single “hero” coin in a deluxe edition. Capsules are sized to the coin diameter and thickness, so confirm the final coin size before ordering them.

Trays and inserts

A tray or insert with a cavity for each piece keeps coins, tokens, or dice in fixed positions. It looks good when the box is opened and stops metal parts rubbing against each other. If your game box already has an insert designed by another supplier, send us the cavity drawing so coin diameter, thickness, and stack height are checked against it before tooling.

Gift boxes and set packing

For retail upgrade kits or collector editions, a printed or branded box can hold a full coin set or a dice set. Tell us the brand artwork, the box style you have in mind, and whether pieces sit in a tray, a pouch, or loose with protective wrapping.

Pouches and other formats

Drawstring pouches, tins, or custom containers can be quoted on request. Send a reference photo or a link to a similar product, and we will check what is practical with the parts and quantity involved.

Packing metal dice

Metal dice need more care than coins. Edges and corners can mark each other, and painted or enamel-filled numbers should not rub against bare metal during shipping.

  • Pack each die in its own cavity or wrap if the dice are sold as a premium set.
  • For bulk orders that will be kitted later, ask for dice to be separated by size or colour so they do not knock together loose in the carton.
  • If your set includes a box or tray, confirm the die size from the approved sample before the insert is finalised.

Our metal dice spec guide covers sizes, finishes, and number fills.

Plan for weight

Metal adds up quickly across hundreds or thousands of sets. Piece weight depends on size, thickness, and material, and we confirm it on the sample. Use that sample weight to estimate:

  • the weight of each game copy, which affects your own shipping and fulfilment costs;
  • carton weight and the number of sets per carton;
  • whether your box and insert can hold the parts without bending or rattling.

Our material comparison explains why brass, zinc alloy, and iron feel different in weight.

Labels, counts, and carton marks

Clear labelling prevents most kitting problems. With your purchase order, confirm:

  • the SKU or part name for each bag and carton (for example “Coin 10 – gold”);
  • pieces per bag and bags per carton;
  • carton marks, gross and net weight, and any barcode or label your partner requires;
  • any warning text your markets require on bags or labels, which you should supply as the publisher.

Weight and carton marks are confirmed with the PO, and packing is checked as part of final inspection, as described on our Quality Control page.

Testing and safety

If your game is sold to families, check which safety standards apply in your markets. We publish real STC sample lab reports for EN71-3, ASTM F963, and REACH nickel release on our Lab Tests page. These are material and product sample tests, not factory certificates. Tell us your target markets with the RFQ so materials, plating, and testing are planned together.

Get a quote that includes packing

Send your artwork, quantities, and packing brief together, and we will quote coins, tokens, or dice with packing included. Samples typically take about 7–10 days, and MOQ is flexible and confirmed per design. If your packing is not decided yet, tell us how the parts will be used and we will suggest options.

FAQ

How should metal game coins be packed for a board game manufacturer?

Usually bulk-packed by value in poly bags with fixed counts and clear labels, so the assembly line can kit them quickly. Confirm the format with your game manufacturer before production.

Can you supply coin capsules for game coins?

Capsules can be included in the quote. They are sized to the coin diameter and thickness, so the final coin size should be confirmed on the sample first.

How do I stop metal dice from scratching in transit?

Keep dice separated, either in individual cavities, wraps, or bags by size and colour, so painted numbers and plated edges do not rub against each other.
